QuickReads ESSA Strong Rated Intervention Program Instructional Routine
Dr. Heibert’s research shows that struggling readers lack automaticity. They struggle to recognize words. The QuickReads instructional technique builds automaticity with modeling and repeated rereadings. Students read each text passage three times: the technique includes 1) Silent reading or read aloud, 2) Modeled reading, and 3) Timed reading. It’s a manageable and effective routine for developing students’ fluency and confidence.

Three-Reads Instructional Routine
Students build automaticity and word recognition from modeling and rereading. Teachers can vary the task with partner readings, audio recordings, and choral readings.
FIRST READ Students read aloud or silently, connecting what they know.
SECOND READ The teacher models fluent reading, and the students can read along.
THIRD READ Students read as much as they can in a one-minute, timed rereading.

Each level of QuickReads includes easy-to-use Benchmark Assessments. These help you determine a student’s placement, word mastery, or readiness for a new unit.
Self-Checks and Reading Logs
Students are motivated to improve their timed readings with the Self-Check Graph. Teachers can use the Reading Logs for ongoing progress monitoring during oral reads.
