COVID-19 and Other Dangerous New Viral Diseases: Where do they come from? How can we fight them? Speaker: Joseph Levine

COVID-19 and Other Dangerous New Viral Diseases: Where do they come from? How can we fight them? Speaker: Joseph Levine

SARS-CoV-2 is the newest viral threat to humanity, following HIV, SARS, MERS, and flu strains like the one that caused the 1918 pandemic. Why are some viruses so deadly? How do new ones arise and spread? Can we draw from experience to defeat this one? This webinar, ideal for online teaching, puts coronaviruses in context, invoking SEP’s, CCC’s and DCI’s in genetics, ecology, evolution, and immunology.

Problem-Based Learning - Supporting Productive Struggle

Problem-Based Learning - Supporting Productive Struggle

Although there is not universal consensus on what mathematics content should be taught, there is consensus that whatever is taught should be taught with understanding. And, we know from research that there is an instructional model for teaching mathematics that helps all students build understanding. That model begins with selecting and implementing tasks or problems that elicit productive cognitive struggle. Productive struggle means students use reasoning and problem-solving processes to select, apply, and connect prior knowledge to new mathematical ideas; connecting prior knowledge to new ideas is the foundation for understanding. This session will illustrate the kind of instruction that elects cognitive struggle, it will illustrate signs that students are engaged in productive struggle, and it will illustrate ways teachers can support students in productive struggle.

Developing Mathematical Thinking Habits Through Mathematical Practices in Kindergarten Through Grade 5

Developing Mathematical Thinking Habits Through Mathematical Practices in Kindergarten Through Grade 5

In a world of technology, with lightning-fast processing and vast memory capacity, what mathematical abilities are going to prepare students to be educated, productive, and employable members of society? The answer is that students must be prepared not only with the knowledge of important mathematical concepts and skills, but also with experiences in which they learn how to think about and use that knowledge in order to investigate, evaluate, make decisions, and justify choices. Mathematical thinking habits develop over time as students consider questions that require them to analyze, justify, and revisit mathematical representations and problem-solving processes. Join author Janie Schielack as she provides us with guidelines for modeling questions that students can learn to ask themselves in order to engage in the mathematical practices that lead to long-term mathematical thinking habits.
